Lens: Nikon 100mm f/2.8 Series E

Marty Walker|3 May 2026

I don't really rank lenses to the standard of a modern YouTuber - this is blisteringly sharp or this lens's bokeh is incredible. This is what the marketing departments want them to say. And although they always say this review is based on my own experiences... blah, blah, blah, they know that if they hand out a shit review their name is going to get dropped of the list for next time.

Lucky for us then that we can say what we like about lenses that are no longer in production like this Nikon 100mm f/2.8 Series E. The simple version is that I like it enough to keep. The image quality is decent for what I use it for (which you can see below). The light weight of this makes the heft of the D700 a tad more manageable too. I've kept it in my D700 bag and hardly notice it's there.

The venerable Richard Haw has more to say on this lens here. He rates it an 'ok' but believes the older Nikkor-P 105mm f/2.5 Auto is a better spend. To each their own. Like with any lens, if it suits your style and budget then get it. There will always be a 'better' lens.
